How many photographers have photographed on a beach ? A lot - and the subject can become a cliché, but the attraction of "The Beach" continues to interest many photographers. The beach has defined edges and is a space in which weather and light are ever changing; and people behave differently with fewer inhibitions - sunbathing, paddling and playing games.
For me the beach at Southport was ever present and helped me to learn about what I really wanted to photograph. These photographs taken in the early 1980's were part of my learning process and made me realise I didn't really want to photograph people unawares.
Much of Southport beach is now overgrown with enchroaching grass and the days of pleasure flights and large car parks are long gone.
