Paxos or Paxoi is the smallest island group within the Greek Ionian Islands and the largest islands are Paxos and Antipaxos. The main town of Paxos and the seat of the municipality is Gaios. The area of the island is 76 square kilometres (29 sq mi).
I visited the island of Paxos three times in the mid 80's to early 90's ( yes - admittedly on holiday) and was attracted to the landscape and people. Fresh water on the island was limited and this meant that large hotels could not be built. Accommodation tended to be in family villas and small apartments. At the time of my visits to the island tourism was on a small scale and the island retained a balance between authenticity and the needs of visitors.
